Boot Care and Maintenance Guide
At the end of each day, gently wipe away any loose dust, dirt, or debris from your boots. These particles are abrasive to all types of leather and, if not removed, can gradually weaken the soles, heels, and stitching—leading to cracks, splits, and damage that affects the overall appearance of your boots.
Use a very soft brush or a damp cloth to clean the crevices, stitching, heels, shaft, vamp, and soles. For dried mud or caked-on dirt, a slightly damp sponge can help lift it away without damaging the leather.
Important Cleaning Warnings:
-
Do not use solvents, gasoline, or household/industrial cleaners to remove stains.
-
Never soak or wash boots under running water.
-
If boots get wet, wipe off excess moisture with a soft dry cloth and allow them to air dry naturally.
-
Avoid drying boots near direct heat sources like fireplaces, stoves, ovens, hair dryers, or direct sunlight. Doing so may cause mold, discoloration, or premature deterioration of the leather.
Conditioning Leather:
Apply a leather conditioner using your fingers or a soft cloth in a gentle, circular motion. Use only a small amount—leather can only absorb so much before it becomes overly oily or sticky. After conditioning, wipe away any excess with a clean, dry cloth.
Using Boot Cream:
Boot creams are available in a variety of colors as well as neutral options for harder-to-match shades. Many also contain conditioning agents. Apply the cream in thin layers using a soft cloth or your fingers, allowing each layer to absorb before applying the next. This not only revives the appearance of the leather but also prevents it from drying out. You can also apply boot cream along the edges of the soles and heels to restore scuffed or worn areas.
Note: Boot cream or polish is not recommended for scaled leather boots such as rattlesnake or python.
Treating Scuffs and Scratches:
For normal wear and tear, use a wax or cream polish in a color that closely matches the damaged area. Apply it in thin layers with a soft cloth. Once dry, gently brush or wipe off the excess. Repeat the process until the repaired area blends with the rest of the boot. For boots that have become stiff or dry, you may use leather saddle soap to help restore suppleness—but keep in mind that frequent use may dull or remove the manufacturer's original finish.
Storage Tips:
To maintain the shape and structure of your boots, use boot trees, especially for the shaft and last. Store boots in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Even if they’re not being worn, boots should be conditioned or polished three to four times a year. Never store damp or wet boots, as this can lead to mold and material breakdown.
